Michael Carnell - USMC
Marine Corps Sergeant Michael Carnell is the Spirit of a Hero 2021 Recipient. Michael is 43-years old and was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon and Liver Cancer on January 9th, 2021.
Michael has been married to his beautiful wife, Gabriella, for 14 years. They have three children, ages 6, 10, and 12.
Michael Carnell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1998 and spent 9-years in the Marines until receiving an Honorable Discharge in 2007. During his time in the Marine Corps, he served as Anti-Tank Assaultmen and as an Intelligence Specialist. During his time in the Marine Corps, Michael spent time in Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, Camp Gonsalves, Okinawa Japan and Fort Worth, Texas. Michael deployed to Iraq in 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with VMGR-234 based out of Fort Worth, Texas and was attached to the I Marine Expeditionary Force while in country. During his time in Iraq, Michael went to a number of locations to include Al Asad, Haditha, Mosul, and Baghdad. Decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5th Awd); Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (2nd Awd), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and numerous letters of commendation.
Michael’s service did not stop there. Although he left the military, the military never left his heart. Since 2007 Michael has tirelessly helped many veteran-based organizations such as Spirit of a Hero, 22Kill, Carry the Load, and Save the Brave. His passion is helping others and we want to take this opportunity to return the favor.
Spirit of a Hero chose Michael and family for our 2021 recipient. As Michael navigates the waters of battling stage IV cancer, we want to lessen the financial burden he will face.
